Hmmm... don't know. Good question. I'll sleep on that one and see if I wake up with any thoughts. My initial thought is that if you are truly passionate about something that there is an area in your life that might be neglected. Do you think it's possible to be passionate about balance and not be out of balance?

I think it's difficult to have real passion for something specific without letting go of other things in your life, to some degree. I also believe there are different degrees of passion, and different degrees of letting go. Maybe that's where the balance comes in ... degrees.

Balance is bunk, IMHO. There's no such thing. Life is a series of trade offs and priorities, and I'm not saying that in a negative way. You might decide that after having your first baby it's more important to stay home than work, which means your career will be on hold. That's a sacrifice. That's a choice. And that's ok. What's not ok is trying to do both with the same intensity and believing it won't have a negative impact on you, your job or your family.

I like the comments... passionate about balance...it's about degrees... it's bunk!

And doesn't it always seem that the folks who seem to be living the perfectly balance life always seem to crack down the road leaving friends, coworkers and neighbors to remark "Wow. I'm shocked. I thought they had the perfect life."

Makes you think doesn't it. Can you really have balance? Is it bunk? I think you may be on to something Jeff. Afterall the drug industry has made billions off of delivering balance via little pills like prozac and zoloft. Maybe that's where balance comes from... you have to be medicated to get it.
